3 Important Things to Know about Heat Pump Systems

When you’re trying to heat and cool your home, you have a surprising number of options to choose from.

When you’re trying to heat and cool your home, you have a surprising number of options to choose from. Before you start shopping around, take some time to educate yourself as much as possible on all of the options out there. One option you have available to you is a heat pump system. This type of system is a great choice for keeping your home comfortable no matter what season it is.

Double Duty

If you choose a heat pump system, you’re in luck because they do both heating and cooling! That’s right, you can have a heat pump installed and get rid of that big old furnace or boiler that’s taking up space in your basement. The way the system works is that to cool the room, it pumps the heat out. To warm the space, the system takes warm air and pumps it into where you want it to go.

Cold Winters?

Unfortunately, the biggest drawback to a heat pump is that their efficiency decreases when the outdoor temperature goes below freezing. Dewpoint also affects efficiency. If you live in an area that is prone to super cold winters, this might not be the best choice for your home. If it doesn’t get super cold during winters where you are, then a heat pump may still work for you. Talk to your HVAC contractor about your options, because there are many factors that go into choosing the right system for your space.

No Ducts, No Problem!

One thing that makes heat pumps so popular is the fact that they don’t necessarily require ductwork. These ductless units still heat and cool the area where they are placed, they just do so without the use of ducts. If you remodel your home and add a room, or you want to finish your basement, or you want to convert your attic into an office or extra bedroom, a ductless unit would be ideal.
