4 Signs It’s Time to Call an HVAC Technician

Don’t let a malfunctioning AC unit ruin your summer fun!

Few things are more uncomfortable than a hot and humid Maryland summer without working air conditioning. Whether you’re a business owner or a homeowner, spending days toughing it out during the warmest part of the year is pretty miserable. If you’re dealing with a minor problem now, you should get it taken care of before it becomes a major problem in the future. Here are the signs you need to call an HVAC technician as soon as possible.

The Air Coming Out Isn’t Cold

If the air leaving your vents isn’t putting out cold air, that’s a sure sign you need to contact an HVAC technician. Warm air might not mean that your unit needs to be totally replaced. Instead, it might just mean that there is a mechanical or another issue that should be remedied as soon as you can.

Metallic Smell

Cold air doesn’t provide much comfort if it smells strange or off-putting. If you suddenly notice a sharp scent that is metallic in nature, it’s a sign that your wiring might be burning out. If you sense a musty or mildew-like odor, there might be mold growing in your HVAC system. Both of these problems, when taken care of quickly, won’t do permanent damage to your system. However, if you drag your feet, you might need to invest in serious mold remediation or a replacement.

Poor Air Output

If you have the air conditioning cranked to the max and the air coming from the vents is weak and tepid, your air compressor could be failing. This problem could also originate from issues with the ductwork in your system. If there are ductwork issues, you might need to invest a great deal in fixing the problem.

Bangs, Clanks, and Other Loud Sounds

Properly maintained HVAC systems often produce minor noises, like a hum in the background when turned on. However, if you hear noises that are grinding, banging, squealing, and grating, you might be overdue for a new system. If the issues have an easy-to-fix origin, an HVAC technician could solve the problem for you quickly.
