Is there Such a Thing as Too Much Air Conditioning?

Is there Such a Thing as Too Much Air Conditioning?

The high heat and humidity can be quite uncomfortable, but did you know that too much air conditioning can cause discomfort as well?

It’s summer on the East Coast, which means temperatures are soaring and humidity is high. During this time of year, everyone is using their air conditioning more than ever. The high heat and humidity can be quite uncomfortable, but did you know that too much air conditioning can cause discomfort as well?

Dryness

While there is lots of moist, humid air outside the air inside could still be very dry. If you spend the majority of your time inside an air-conditioned home or building, it can cause lots of dryness in your skin, nasal passages, and eyes. This is because the air from an AC unit is typically very dry unless the unit has its own humidifier. To combat this dryness you can use humidifiers, moisturizers, nasal spray, and eye drops.

Respiratory Illnesses

With the health crisis we are currently facing, everyone is more aware than ever of the toll that respiratory illnesses can take. The excessive dryness that can come from overexposure to air conditioning can dry out mucus membranes, which will leave them vulnerable to all different types of infection.

Lower Heat Tolerance

Spending too much time in a cool space with the air conditioning cranked up can also lower your body’s ability to tolerate the heat whenever you venture back outside. You may find that you get tired quickly when spending time outdoors. You may also experience headaches, dizziness, trouble breathing or even heat stroke in more extreme cases if you spend too much time in air conditioning and then go outside.

Keep Your Air Conditioning Safe

The aforementioned health problems sound scary, but fortunately, there are some simple steps you can follow to help keep the unpleasantness at bay.

  • Replace filters according to the recommendations of the manufacturer and your HVAC technician.
  • Keep up with preventative maintenance.
  • Make sure your house is well-ventilated to prevent the trapping of bacteria.
  • Ask your technician about installing an air purifier and/or humidifier.
  • Turn the temperature up a little when no one is home.
