Is Your HVAC System Making Your Home Dusty?

Is Your HVAC System Making Your Home Dusty?

During the winter, you can’t really open up the windows to air out the house because it’s just too cold. Because of this, the colder months basically become a near-constant battle against dust.

It’s winter here on the East Coast. During the winter, you can’t really open up the windows to air out the house because it’s just too cold. Because of this, the colder months basically become a near-constant battle against dust. The air is drier, which just makes it easier for the dust to travel through your home. Unfortunately, your HVAC system could actually be exacerbating the problem.

Start with the Filter

When you start to notice more dust around your home, the first place you look should be the HVAC filter. If it is clogged, this will decrease the efficiency of your system and a clogged filter can’t trap any more dust. It’s also important to make sure the filter is a good fit for your system. The edges of your air filter should fit the air intake vent perfectly. Even the smallest gaps can create an opening for dust and other allergens to be pulled into your home.

Sprung a Leak?

Another issue that can increase dust circulation is a leak somewhere in your ductwork. Poor workmanship, age, and other types of damage can cause small gape to open up in your ducts which allow dust to circulate freely throughout your system. You can perform a limited visual inspection of the airflow in your home by turning off all the lights and using a flashlight to watch where the dust is coming from. Accurately diagnosing and fixing an HVAC leak will require the help of a professional HVAC contractor.

Increase the Humidity

Since the cold, winter air allows dust to flow much more freely, a simple fix would be to use humidifiers. When the air is more humid, dust settles a lot easier. It also sticks to filters better due to the increased moisture in the air.  If you live in an especially dry area, you may want to consider a whole-home humidifier.
