The Effects of Your Thermostat on Energy Efficiency

The Effects of Your Thermostat on Energy Efficiency

The right thermostat can keep your energy bills down and still help your home stay comfortable.

Did you know that using a different thermostat can actually improve energy efficiency? The right thermostat can keep your energy bills down and still help your home stay comfortable.  There are many different types of thermostats on the market. Which type is best for your needs?

The Types of Thermostats

  • Manual: These are generally the oldest, but they still work just fine. Manual thermostats work by turning a dial up or down to set the temperature where you’re comfortable. They don’t have lots of confusing controls; they just tell your HVAC system to heat or cool your space to the desired temperature. Manual thermostats tend to not be as good for saving energy because people need to remember to adjust it by hand.
  • Programmable: Programmable thermostats allow users to set a schedule so that the heat or AC will automatically come on when it detects the wrong temperature. You can set it to turn off while you sleep or adjust the temperature for when you’re away. Programmable thermostats help you to save energy while staying comfortable
  • Smart: Smart thermostats are the newest way of increasing efficiency. They connect to your Wi-Fi network and can be controlled by a smartphone app. Some models will even “learn” your habits and start to adjust the temperature based on your past habits.

Choosing Your New Thermostat

Most importantly, you should make sure the thermostat you choose is compatible with your HVAC system. This will largely depend on the type of system you have and its power source. Your HVAC contractor will be able to help you choose a thermostat that works with your system.

Energy Savings

The amount of energy you save will largely depend on how much you’re willing to adjust the temperature. If you keep the temperature too high in the winter and too low in the summer, there’s not a magical solution out there. Saving energy sometimes means that you may need to wear a sweater or put on some shorts. If you’re willing to adjust, your smart thermostat can save you as much as 15% on your energy bills throughout the year!
