Types of Heating Systems for Your Home

Since it is winter time, you’re probably thinking about your heating system a lot more these days.

Since it is winter time, you’re probably thinking about your heating system a lot more these days. There are a few different types of heating systems to choose from to heat your home. Which type do you have?

Furnace

Furnace heating systems, also known as “forced air” systems, are the most commonly used systems in the U.S. They’re known for their reliability. Furnaces can be highly efficient when they are properly maintained. Different units are rated based on their annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), which shows how much fuel was actually used to produce heat. Newer, more modern units can have AFUE ratings of up to 97 percent!

Boiler

Traditional boiler heating systems work by heating water and pumping it through a network of pipes. These pipes are separate from your plumbing system. The pipes carry the water to radiators to heat your rooms. The heat coming off of the pipes also helps to heat walls and floors. There are 3 different types of radiators that can be used with boilers: steam, hot water, and hydronic. While these types of heating systems can sometimes cost more to purchase and install, they also tend to be highly efficient.

Heat Pump

A heat pump heat system is the most efficient way to heat your home. A heat pump can also be used for cooling when the air warms up. The way heat pumps work is by pulling heat from the air and pushing it where it needs to go. During the cooler parts of the year, it pumps warm air into your home to keep you warm. During the warmer months, it does the opposite and pumps the warm air out to create a cooling effect. The major downfall of heat pump heating systems is that they don’t work nearly as well in extreme cold.
