How healthy is the air inside of your home? Indoor air quality is something that is often overlooked. That’s because it’s so easy to assume that allergens, pathogens, and other contaminants only exist outside. How could they infiltrate your home? Wherever you go when you step outside, more things can stick to your clothes, shoes, skin, and hair than you realize. So, with that in mind, we’ve assembled a list of tips and tricks for cleaning and purifying your home’s air supply.
Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned by Professionals
First of all, schedule a time to get your air ducts cleaned. While at first, this sounds like a simple DIY project, in reality, it really isn’t. That’s because the ducts fill up with dust, debris, and other types of allergens. They’ll be recirculated back into the air that travels throughout the house. Professional technicians can diagnose what’s wrong and work to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.
Replace the Air Filters Every month
Every month or so, you should replace the air filters. These devices are meant to pull pollutants and irritants out of the air inside your home. Once they are clogged, they are no longer as effective or efficient as when they were newly installed. Clean the filter (if it’s a reusable model), replace the filter, and then remind yourself to inspect them at the end of each month.
Upgrade to a More Sophisticated Filter
Likewise, invest in a more sophisticated filter. As with other elements of your home’s HVAC system, the filters become more and more refined over time. HEPA filters with a MERV rating of 10 or higher are ideal.
Add Ultraviolet Lights to Your Current HVAC System
Ultraviolet lights are great solutions for killing off any microorganisms that are lurking in your air supply. Having multiple lights enabled as a failsafe measure is also something to consider if you can afford to have them. Bacteria, mold, viruses, and mildew spores can all ruin your IAQ, so don’t let them do that!
Set Up an Air Purification System
Although air purifiers can be expensive, they are also a worthwhile investment. They can make your air even cleaner and healthier. It’ll be easier to breathe, and on the whole, you will feel much more comfortable, too!
