Addressing Air Quality Concerns Regarding Ordinary Household Products

IAQ household products WE Kingswell

Believe it or not, several common household products can affect your home’s indoor air quality.

Spring cleaning season is upon us! Part of the transition from winter to spring involves the spreading of pesticides. Obviously, while that can benefit your lawn, it’s not the best for your health. Likewise, greenhouse gases could be affecting you and your family as well. The problem is, they are much harder to detect. These substances are definitely harmful, but other pollutants could be making you sick. Are you coughing and sneezing all the time? It’s not just allergies!

Fumes from Cleaning Supplies

Let’s say that your spouse or in-law has a sensitivity to smells. These odors are unpleasant, but sadly, they are also a necessary evil. You should always have an easily accessible stock of cleaning supplies in your home. With the pandemic continuing to affect everyone, disinfecting wipes and other cleaning products matter more than before COVID-19.

Air Freshener Sprays and Candles

Cans of air freshener sprays and fun scented candles seem innocuous enough. However, they can negatively impact your home’s indoor air quality too. Even though you may not realize it at first, these items release chemicals that make you feel ill. Natural products are gaining more favor with the average homeowner these days – and there’s a good reason for it! For instance, Soy, beeswax, and essential oils are much better for your well-being.

Wood-Burning Fireplaces or Fire Pits

Do you know about the concept of hygge? Despite its funny name, it’s worth trying out. Wood-burning fireplaces and fire pits can both make your home feel cozier. Early spring can still be pretty chilly outside, especially after the sun goes down. Burnt wood and the ashes left behind emit carbon monoxide and add pollutants as unfortunate byproducts of that enjoyment. Make sure there’s proper ventilation around where these flame-based features are locating.

The Paint You Just Used

Spring is also a great time to start some overdue home improvement projects. One of those activities is the mundane task of painting. Half-empty paint cans typically go back to the garage when they aren’t being used. Low-VOC paints won’t contaminate the rooms and surfaces you just spent the weekend painting. Plus, that’s one less headache (both literally and figuratively) for you to cope with as you try to live your life!
