Keeping Your HVAC System Clean to Prevent the Spread of Germs

Now more than ever everyone is more and more mindful of germs and the many ways that they can be spread. One way you may not immediately consider is through your HVAC system.

Now more than ever everyone is more and more mindful of germs and the many ways that they can be spread. One way you may not immediately consider is through your HVAC system. The best way to prevent any sort of issue with your system is to make sure all preventative maintenance is taken care of in a timely manner. There are a few extra precautions you can take to ensure your HVAC system isn’t spreading germs throughout your home.

Air Filters and Purifiers

As their name suggests, air filters are there to remove dust and other impurities from the air that’s being pulled into your HVAC unit. During this time of year, when it’s not quite warm enough to open all the windows, your air filters are going to be working especially hard to filter and re-circulate air throughout your home. Not all air filters are created equal, so be sure to make sure yours are the highest quality available. If you still have concerns, you may want to invest in air purifiers to keep the germs at bay.

Other Ways to Keep Your System Clear

  • Keep the areas around your HVAC units clean and free of debris. Dirt, dust, sticks, leaves, and anything else that may be crowding around indoor or outdoor units can cause circulation problems.
  • Call an exterminator to guard against pests. Critters can use ductwork to sneak into your home. An exterminator can use chemicals and traps to keep them out.
  • Ventilate the bathroom when you’re showering: either by turning on an exhaust fan or opening a window.
  • Beware of water damage. If your HVAC unit is malfunctioning at all, it can leak water into parts of your home and create mold and mildew.
