Heating and Cooling Questions: Why is the Second Floor So Much Warmer?

As we all know, hot air is supposed to rise while cooler air sinks. So you might be wondering, why are the upper floors of my house warmer than the lower ones?

Spring and summer are the two times of year when the earth is tilted closer to the sun. That’s why temperatures are going up. As we all know, hot air is supposed to rise while cooler air sinks. So you might be wondering, why are the upper floors of my house warmer than the lower ones? Science is the reason. However, there are other contributing factors.

Blame the Air Conditioner

It could be that your air conditioner is to blame. Even a residential HVAC unit will need to be replaced at some point. It goes beyond needing to switch out the filter every month or so. Every year, it will become a little less efficient. Depending on how old your system, and for that matter, your home is, it could be time to replacing your AC unit. Before that happens though, you should schedule an inspection.

Blame the Ductwork

That’s because something could be wrong with the ductwork inside your home and running from the air conditioning unit to the rest of the house. Gaps and leaks could be causing the cold air to not reach the upper floors. That’s because it has farther to travel and it is likely to heat up before it can get to the second floor or higher. There are more corners and joints. Getting the ductwork maintained is just as important as making sure the thermostat works the way it should.

Blame the Attic

Not every house has an attic. But that doesn’t mean that if you have one, the attic is always the problem. On the occasions you need to visit your home to put something away or pull something out, you’ll notice that it feels much hotter than the rest of the house. The heat could have to do with the insulation level in your attic absorbing all of the heat and not venting it back out.
