How to Reduce Allergens in Your HVAC System

How to Reduce Allergens in Your HVAC System

For people who suffer from seasonal allergies, spring can be difficult. Fortunately, there are many easy ways to minimize allergens indoors this spring and summer.

Springtime is here on the East Coast. Plants are blooming and our landscapes are turning green again. An unfortunate side effect of the spring awakening is that allergens are also super high this time of year. For people who suffer from seasonal allergies, spring can be difficult. Fortunately, there are many easy ways to minimize allergens indoors this spring and summer.

Keep Up with Regular Maintenance

By far one of the easiest ways to prevent issues with your HVAC system and improve indoor air quality is to make sure all HVAC maintenance is performed in a timely manner. Not only does this improve system performance and efficiency, but it also gives your technician a chance to identify small problems and fix them before they become big expensive problems.

Invest in High-Quality Filters

Air filters have what’s called a “MERV” rating. When choosing filters for your system, look for filters with a MERV rating of eight or more. The higher the rating is, the more microscopic particles the filter will remove from the air. You should also inspect your air filters often and clean or replace them whenever necessary. It is also important to keep in mind that if you have pets in your home, you may need to replace your air filters more frequently.

Keeping Dust at Bay

Even with the highest quality air filters that money can buy, you may still see some dust around your home. When you’re performing your weekly dusting, dust all HVAC intake vents and registers first, and then do everything else. Since the HVAC system is what circulates air throughout your home, cleaning these components first can help to reduce the amount of dust that circulates while you are cleaning.
