Whether you need to heat your space or keep it cool, there are several different types of HVAC systems that can accomplish that. They all use different methods to accomplish their goals. You will need to talk to your HVAC technician about your needs and climate preferences to figure out the right system for your space.
In a forced-air system, there is a compressor that blows, or forces, the heated or cooled air through the duct system. You have probably noticed that many homes and businesses have compressors outside of them somewhere. Those compressors are propelling the air throughout the inside of the property. The size of the compressor will depend on the size of the system. Some homes will have separate compressors for the upper level and lower level due to sometimes extreme differences in temperatures.
A heat pump system won’t make your space hot all the time, despite what the name would have the average person believe. In the summer, to keep your space cool, a heat pump system will pull the heat out of the air inside and pump it back outside. In the winter, it pulls all of the warmth it can find into the space until it is the desired temperature. If you live in an area that is prone to extremely cold temperatures for a large part of the year, a heat pump system may not be the best choice for your space.
Ductless systems are particularly popular in hotels and in older homes where the owners would rather not install duct systems. With a ductless unit, it is super easy for the occupants of each room to adjust the temperature to their individual comfort.
