Four Problems that Can Develop from a Dirty AC Air Filter

Why Does Your HVAC Air Filter Get Dirty So Quickly?

Learn about four problems that can develop from a dirty AC air filter.

How clean is your home’s AC Air filter? Ensuring that your air filter is clean and taken care of is not just important for your air quality, it’s important to the health of everyone in your home and to the health of your AC Unit! Keeping filters clean can prevent so many problems, including decreased efficacy, poor indoor air quality, and more. Today, we’ll walk you through some of the most common issues that arise from not changing or cleaning filters regularly enough.

Compromised Efficiency

You might think you’re saving money by keeping air filters in for longer than you should, but in truth, you likely cost yourself more in utilities and future repairs. Having a clogged filter means your AC unit has to work harder to produce the same result. Not only will this bump up your power bill, but it puts more stress on the unit leading to the need for more repairs

Frozen Coils

Has your dirty air filter ever caused your AC unit to seize up? When cold air gets trapped in the unit because the filter is clogged, it can cause the unit to start building frost up on the evaporator coils and the condenser.

Poor Air Quality

One of the most prominent issues is that your air quality will suffer greatly. The filter is mostly there to protect the unit, but it also plays a role in filtering the air in your home too. As the filter gets clogged, it’s no longer able to do its job, resulting in more air impurities.

Short Cycling

Does it seem like you have to drop your thermostat temperature lower and lower to get a little cold? This may be a sign that your AC unit is short cycling. When the cold air is trapped behind a dirty air filter, it causes the AC to think that the temperature has reached the desired level and shut off too soon. Not only does this make your home less comfortable, but it’s hard on your AC unit as well, and can lead to increased damage and repairs.
