4 Types of Air Filters

4 Types of Air Filters

Changing the air filter is one of the most important ways to keep an HVAC system running smoothly.

Changing the air filter is one of the most important ways to keep an HVAC system running smoothly. However, not every homeowner knows how to do this. In fact, there tends to be a lot of confusion about the different kinds of air filters.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass filters are also called synthetics. In terms of durability, they are the least expensive and least effective. This means that they’ll need to be switched out more often than their counterparts. These filters will stop dirt and dust, but not much else. While it helps ensure that airflow reaches optimal levels, a fiberglass filter won’t do much to stop any contaminants that could make you feel sick.

Polyester

Polyester filters are much less common, but despite the fact that they are hard to find and more expensive, they are well worth the investment. Particles that are 5 microns or larger don’t stand a chance when up against these air filters. Anywhere from 80 to 95% of those particles get stopped in their tracks. Although most homeowners could feel the sticker shock, look at it this way – it does a better job protecting you and your family against pollutants that decrease indoor air quality.

Electrostatic

Electrostatic filters can use the power of static electricity to help pull particles out of the air. There are two kinds of these filters: disposable and washable. Washable filters sound strange but you can make them last longer than other filters that are disposable. All you need to do wash them is to use some soap and water, but it’s essential to make sure that the filters are completely dried off. If you don’t, then you run the risk of mold and mildew developing.

Pleated

Pleated filters are worth your time to track down and investigate. They can filter out bacteria and viruses like you wouldn’t believe. They still manage to optimize airflow without losing the ability to reduce the number of pollutants in the air around you.
