5 Signs Indicating Your Thermostat is Broken

5 Signs Indicating Your Thermostat is Broken

If your home’s heating and cooling systems aren’t working this can be a sign indicating a broken thermostat.

Thermostats are an intricate part of an HVAC system that’s key in operating and adjusting the settings on your home’s heating and cooling systems. When you’re experiencing issues where your home isn’t warming up in cold winter temperatures or cooling down in hot summer temperatures, this can indicate that something is wrong with your thermostat. Listed below are five signs indicating that your thermostat is broken.

No Power

A blank, unresponsive, or dark screen on a thermostat that isn’t displaying your home’s temperature indicates that it’s no longer working or receiving power. Typically, your home’s thermostat should display your room temperature and other details. However, if nothing shows, your thermostat either needs new batteries or is experiencing a major system malfunction, which can impact your home’s comfort levels.

Your Home’s HVAC Unit Won’t Turn On/Off

Another common sign indicating that your thermostat is broken is that your home’s heating and cooling systems aren’t responding when moving the switch to on or off. If your HVAC unit won’t turn on when you indicate it to or constantly remains on, this is a common indication of a wiring issue preventing you from freely operating your HVAC unit, turning it on, off, or adjusting its temperature.

Displaying the Incorrect Room Temperature

When your thermostat is operating properly, it should display an accurate temperature of your home’s interior. However, if your home is constantly feeling cooler or warmer than the temperature depicted on your thermostat, then your thermostat may be broken. If your thermostat is displaying the incorrect room temperature, this indicates that it can’t accurately measure your home’s temperature and needs a repair or replacement.

Thermostat Doesn’t Respond

When adjusting the temperature settings on your thermostat, your HVAC unit should respond almost immediately. When your thermostat is turned on or adjusted, you’ll most likely hear it or feel air coming from the vents. However, if you don’t receive an instant response and can’t hear or feel anything, it may be time for the thermostat to be repaired or replaced.
