How Will Higher Ceilings Affect Your Home’s HVAC?

Higher ceilings will undoubtedly affect the HVAC serving your home.

Your home’s architecture can really make a remarkable difference. But the last thing many homeowners want is that for that difference to manifest on their monthly energy bills! Higher ceilings will undoubtedly affect the HVAC serving your home. The real question is, how so? If you are curious about the answer, then just read on!

Higher Ceilings Mean More Space

When your house features high ceilings, that automatically means that there is more space in your home. On the surface, this sounds amazing. But this configuration means that your HVAC system will have an even more demanding workload whenever you run it. That’s because more heating and cooling needs to be distributed; in turn, you’ll start to see more energy consumption and the subsequent charges from your power company.

A properly-sized and optimized HVAC system will be a lifesaver for your wallet, though. That’s because they will help mitigate the downsides of elevated ceilings. Hire an expert HVAC contractor to crunch the numbers and do the math for you – they can figure out the size of the system you need! Plus, they’ll also calculate the capacity you’ll need given the amount of square footage inside your home, along with ceiling height and several other factors to boot.

The Efficiency of Ductwork

Without well-maintained ductwork, the HVAC unit won’t run as efficiently. Since heat rises, you might find that you’ll still feel chilly in the winter. So no matter how high you set your thermostat, you might not feel any warmer. Likewise, when you run your AC on a hot day, it’ll take longer for the cool air to help you feel better. This scenario doesn’t need to turn into a dilemma, though! Just talk to an HVAC contractor who can help. Air return registers can move the air around as necessary, depending on the season.

The Impact of Ceiling Fans

At first, you might be a bit skeptical about how ceiling fans can help. As it turns out, they’ll spread the air around more quickly and effectively. When you have high ceilings, that reliability will give you some peace of mind. All you need to do is spin the blades differently. This setup means you’ll have to run them clockwise to move the warm air closer to the floor in the winter. Meanwhile, running the fan blades counterclockwise in the summer will bring the AC up to you instead.
